If you are buying a new mattress for your bed you may be wondering what exactly to do with your old mattress. You can’t exactly throw it in a garbage bag and put it out with the rest of your trash for the dump truck to pick up because it is rather large for that and would occupy too much space in the dump truck. There are a few ways that you can get rid of your old mattress before you put a new one on your bed.
Before throwing it away, consider how old the mattress is and what kind of condition it is in. You have every right as a person to throw away your mattress no matter how old or new. If the mattress is on the newer side and is not exactly in too bad a shape, then consider donating it. There are plenty of less fortunate people or college students who would be willing to take a mattress off of your hands rather than buy a new one. Donating it to someone in need also removes one more piece of garbage from entering a landfill.
Another donation option is to call up a hotel or motel and ask them if they refurbish old mattresses. Some hotels have the knowhow and skill to refurbish the mattress so it is usable again. If you are the type of person who likes do it yourself projects and recycling you can always take matters into your own hands and cut up the mattress for some other use. The mattress fill could be used to stuff pillows and there is a use for the springs if you put your mind to it. This saves most of the mattress material from going to waste and what ends up in the landfill is just the outer casing of the mattress.
If the mattress is too old or beat up to donate to someone or you just cannot find any takers for your mattress there are two things you can do. If you live in a city or do not have a pickup truck that is large enough to transport a mattress you can call the mattress company you bought it from and they will usually come and pick it up for you. However, if you do have the time and the space in your car or truck to put a mattress in it and drive to the dump the dump will take the mattress for you as well. Hot Tub
